Beta Sign Ups
Sep. 8th, 2011 09:04 pm
Many writers may find a beta on their own, but if you are willing to step up and help out, this is where you need to be! A beta reader is someone who reads a writer's work with a critical eye with the aim of improving grammar, spelling, and characterization before the author posts the final product. All participants must have their story beta'd by at least one person.
Beta volunteer: Can we get some lovely volunteers to help our writers out? Betas are love, so comment below with the following text! Comments are unscreened.

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings: Only one to mind currently is SPN but ask and if I know the series I'll more than likely take you on.
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Sex scenes. I never did get much practice at writing them so I don't feel right about trying to edit them.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? Some of everything really. I was raised by a mom who is even more grammar Nazi than I am so my grasp of the English language (and all it's odd quirks) is unquestionable. My own style might be a bit off-putting but you need to know the rules before you can bend them. Also, I make the effort not to change anything that might be a personal style in your writing.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? Depends when you ask but generally one week is the estimate I give. Work and life might line up so that I can finish it the same night but they might also push back the time in rare cases.
Other comments:
I don't have Word so only .rtf or .txt please (unless you have .wps which I can also access.)
When you email me (whether we've spoken through messages or not) please give me a summary of what you're looking for me to do. If we've spoken it helps me keep track of who is who and if we haven't it tells me what you need.
Thanks and welcomes.^^

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings:Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel the Series, Star Wars, Gilmore Girls. Instead of listing ALL of my pairings ;) I'd prefer if you send me your story/pairing, and I can tell you if I'm down to beta. Yay !
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Squicks include hardcore non-con/rape. Other than that, I'm a pretty dark writer and reader.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? Characterization: motivation, internal dialogue, development, emotional flow, external dialogue. SPaG (graduated with an English degree). Prose/descriptive scenes. Sex scenes. I'm from the US so I can't help with Brit-picking. My style of beta-ing: I am big on constructive & analytical crit. I write huge chunks of my thoughts, opinions, suggestions, praise, and picking at any flaws. So if you're not looking for a hardcore crit beta, I am probably not the best for you :)
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? Three days to a week.
Note: I only use Google Docs to edit :) It's so easy to correct & add comments...I'm never going back to Word :D

What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? I beta at around 40 pages a day but have been known to sit up until the wee hours when a proof needed to be finished quickly.

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings: This is what I can think of, off the top of my head, as far as fandoms go: Angel: The Series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Burn Notice, Chuck, Covert Affairs, Criminal Minds, Dollhouse, Firefly, Fringe, Hawaii Five-0, Leverage, Nikita, Torchwood & X-Men: First Class. Regarding pairings, almost anything would be fine.
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Yes. I do not like mpreg, nor do I like stories in which the characters are turned into children or cute animals. I am not a huge fan of incest, either.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? I have edited professionally; I can provide a CV if that is desired. I'm best with grammar and spelling stuff; I can guarantee that I won't miss a thing. I'm also good at making sure that there are no continuity errors and that things, such as characterization, are consistent throughout the story.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? This is a tough one. I have some chronic illnesses that are somewhat unpredictable; consequently, left to my own devices, I will sometimes get it back within days, and will sometimes take much longer. If I'm given a deadline, however, I am usually able to get it done by then.
I look forward to beta reading some stellar stories!

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings: bandom
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? nope!
What are your strengths as a beta reader? I've worked as a professional proofreader/subeditor and have studied English literature to postgraduate level.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? It would probably take me a week, but it would help loads if I knew in advance WHICH week to set aside some time.
I haven't betaed before but would really like to increase my Beta Karma Points because I'll be needing one myself soon. I'm happy to just look for spelling/grammar issues or provide con-crit (nicely!) on other aspects like characterisation, plot, pacing, style. Just let me know what you're looking for xx
Oh, and I'm British (but I could probably handle American spellings).
